Atlanta rapper and social media personality Shawty Dred, whose real name is Mercedes New, has been indicted by the United States Department of Justice. Rolling Stone and 95.5 WSB reported that the indictment is part of a federal crackdown on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program fraud. According to Rolling Stone, the Department of Justice Office of Public Affairs released documents on October 21, 2026, naming New as one of more than 40 suspects apprehended in the nationwide enforcement action. [1][2][3]
Discrepancies exist across reports regarding the financial scope of the alleged crimes. Rolling Stone reported that the nationwide crackdown targets a 42 million dollar fraud scheme and connects New to over 500 electronic benefit transfer fraud incidents in Georgia. However, Hoodline and AllHipHop reported that New is facing charges in an alleged four million dollar SNAP scheme. AllHipHop added that the rapper faces 63 federal counts. [1][4][5]
The indictment follows previous federal enforcement actions against fraud within the music industry. As FTMQ Music reported earlier, North Carolina musician Mike Smith was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison and ordered to forfeit eight million dollars after pleading guilty to charges related to artificially inflating music streams.
