Country musician Willie Nelson and indie rock band Yo La Tengo have officially endorsed Democratic candidate James Talarico for the Texas Senate. Pitchfork reported that Talarico, a current state representative, featured Nelson in a new online campaign advertisement. Pitchfork and Stereogum both report that Yo La Tengo will perform a benefit concert supporting Talarico's campaign in Austin, Texas, on October 27, 2026. [1][2]
According to Pitchfork, the endorsement from Nelson follows a meeting between the two figures backstage at Nelson's Fourth of July concert earlier in 2026. In the campaign clip, Nelson called Talarico a good man who will serve the state well as a senator. Pitchfork noted that Talarico has also secured endorsements from other prominent artists, including Don Henley and the Chicks, leading up to the November midterm elections. [1]
Talarico is an educator, Presbyterian seminarian, and politician who has served in the Texas House of Representatives since 2018. He is the Democratic nominee running in the 2026 United States Senate election in Texas. [5]
Nelson was born on April 29, 1933, in Abbott, Texas. He became a central figure in the outlaw country subgenre during the late 1960s, gaining major critical and commercial success with albums such as Shotgun Willie in 1973, Red Headed Stranger in 1975, and Stardust in 1978. [4][6]
