Musician and activist Tom Morello stated in a recent interview with Star FM that rock bands do not need to be political. Ultimate Classic Rock and DRGNews reported that the Rage Against the Machine co-founder argued bands should not attempt political themes merely to please him. [1][2]

According to Ultimate Classic Rock, Morello also discussed his long-standing role as a spokesperson for heavy metal music, a genre he noted often faces disrespect or misunderstanding from outsiders. He said he has advocated for heavy music throughout his nearly 15 years involved with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. [1]

Ultimate Classic Rock reported that Morello credited his efforts with helping secure Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductions for Randy Rhoads, Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden. He stated that he worked hard to persuade the committee to recognise these heavy music acts. [1]

Morello formed Rage Against the Machine in 1991, creating multi-platinum albums with anti-capitalist themes and winning Grammy Awards for tracks including Guerrilla Radio. He developed a guitar style using killswitches and pedals to mimic turntablism and industrial noise, and later performed with Audioslave, Prophets of Rage, and as The Nightwatchman. [3]
