Mastodon Announce Limited Vinyl LP Pressed With Real Fossil Dust

Metal band Mastodon have announced a limited edition vinyl pressing of their album Marrow Deep containing actual crushed mastodon fossils, Rolling Stone and Consequence reported on October 9, 2026. The edition is named Bone Dust and is limited to 170 copies. [1][2][6]

The band received a bag of fossilized mastodon teeth from a fan roughly 20 years ago, according to Rolling Stone and Consequence. Bassist and vocalist Troy Sanders created the idea to turn the Ice Age mammal teeth into vinyl. Band members personally sprinkled usable fossil dust onto the records during production. [1][2]

The project involved a partnership between record labels Loma Vista Recordings and Waxwork Records alongside the geology department at the University of Georgia, Consequence and Rolling Stone reported. [1][2]
